PDPW Holland/ Germany Tour 2019: Day 1

So we have been home literally less than one day and I am still trying to absorb, comprehend, and process this trip we have returned from.  I will comment that not only was it overwhelming, amazing and exhausting all at the same time (along with the fact we traveled 29+ Hours to get home in the wee morning hours today).  I wanted to share my trip experience along with document all we saw for me to look back on it.  I will start off with what it was and how we came upon this.

Months ago John and I were signed up to do a Vacation Race in Costa Rica in January 2020.  It was far from a vacation as you do a 5-10k per day traveling from one point to another.  Following John's knee surgery we had second thoughts and were given the option to get a full refund.  I saw the trip PDPW was hosting and knowing it would be too much to do both it wasn't an option.  After getting the chance to refund we turned around and hopped on this trip.  We didn't know much about the trip other than we were going to Holland and Germany!!  Two of our bucket list places for sure!

Being in the dairy business is like being in one big extended family.  We attend shows and breed association events and regularly and catch up with our "family" at each of these events.  PDPW (Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin....which has expanded to include everyone) is a great organization that provides tool, support and education for dairymen.  We knew no one leaving on our trip, but the extended family of dairy people would provide true once again.  This group quickly felt like long time friends we have known and enjoyed for years.

Coming from Texas we have no direct flights anywhere near our starting destination. We flew out of Amarillo into our normal layover hub of Dallas.  We flew into Chicago to stay overnight to make sure we had no hiccups before flying out.  We arrived at Chicago airport nice and early to be greeted by the fabulous PDPW team of Julie & Karlene.  The line soon accumulated and we boarded on our flight to Munich which would arrive at 7:15 am (or 12:15 am our regular time).  A layover and  connecting flight to Berlin where we landed at 10:05 am.  We were greeted by our fabulous tour guide/local translator Mathilde.  She was like a kid in a candy store, bundle of energy, and stand up comedian all in one.  We couldn't have had a better leader to guide us for the next two weeks on our adventures.

After no sleep on our flights we were off to Berlin for our day of tours to begin.
